Otterbein Lake Project Art Exhibit click here - An ongoing silent auction to benefit the Otterbein Lake Project. Affortable art and helping out a special community project at the same time. On Fourth Friday June 23rd - come for a special Fourth Friday Celebration!
For the past several months I have had the pleasure of working with the Otterbein Lake Project with Linda Brownstein and many others. This project, located just south west of Alum Creek Park will be a destination point for not only many of our residents as well as visitors and it is literally located just down the street from Gallery 202.
A little background:
Otterbein Lake has been hidden from view in its secluded Westerville, Ohio, location south of Main St. and just west of Alum Creek. The 8-acre lake, known only to a few fishermen, is about to be transformed. A group of central Ohio residents is working with the Westerville Parks and Recreation Department to develop the lake to be scenic, environmental, educational, and recreational.
When the Otterbein Lake Project is finished, it will include decks and low boardwalks, an interpretive ³ green roof² shelter, walking paths, native vegetation, and native wildlife and habitat.
Thanks to the local Lions Club member Jack Chenoweth, several "Wessie" boxes were constructed as functional art donation boxes. Gallery 202, Partners in Art, Inc. artists Renee Kropat, Connie Wood, the Hanby Arts Magnet School(Art teacher, Carol Kammick and A&T teacher Jackie Ryan) and Robert Frost Elementary (Mrs. Guseman's 3rd grade class with Hyla Skudder, artist in residence) have volunteered their creative energies to create a fun and functional concept of Wessie. As constructed, these donation boxes will be on display at various fund raising functions. Also look for these Wessie Artworks in and at local community events and businesses. Otterbein Lake Project.

Hanby School Project -
Mrs. Ryanıs fourth grade class and Ms. Kamnick the art teacher at Hanby Arts Magnet School would like to thank Renee Kropat and Lindalee Brownstein for the opportunity to work on the Otterbein Lake project.
After accepting the challenge to decorate one of the many wooden boxes, Mrs. Brownstein and Mrs. Kropat came to meet with Mrs. Ryanıs fourth grade class to discuss the Otterbein Lake Project. Information was shared, questions were answered and many imaginative creations were discussed.
The sides of the donation box are covered with tissue paper and accented with overlaid construction paper objects. The sides of the Wessie box depict Otterbein Lake.
Our Wessie, the friendly sea monster, was constructed by using a cardboard tube surrounded by crumpled newspaper and a paper plate for the mouth. Wessie rises from the waves of Lake Otterbein to gobble up any money donations.
Robert Frost Project
Here are a few pictures from the Robert Frost Elementary School Wessie Box designs. This first three designs are students from Mrs. Guseman's 3rd grade class (working with Hyla Skudder, Artist is residence), These three were combined to make up the final design.
The 3 color versions of the final combined class design were voted on by the students and Wessie will be purple with multicolored designs and contrasting "fins" and will be made of colored sands. The water background will be a swirled blue painted pattern. Tree line will be felt/paper or other green textured items cut and glued. Fish and other underwater creatures and seaweed/plants will be cut from craft foam and colored papers and glued on. The sandy bottom will be actual "sand sand" embedded with shells and other interesting brought in objects (except the back panel). The sky will be a yummy yellow/orange/red sunset painterly event with large sun.
